Friday Facts in a Flash: October 23, 2026 News, Holiday Travel & Midlife Updates

Hey you, it's me! 💋

We are only 23 days into October, and somehow this month has already delivered enough headlines for three months. Seriously, did October drink an extra-large coffee and choose chaos?

One minute something is trending on TikTok, the next minute Google is having a full-blown moment, and somewhere in between we're trying to remember what we walked into the kitchen for. If you're in your 40s, 50s, or 60s, you have enough tabs open in your brain. So I gathered the stories in one place, with links to the original reporting, because who has time to chase down a thousand headlines?

Consider this your October 23 catch-up: pop culture, health, money, family, and the headlines worth knowing, all in one place. I have rounded up the articles and linked the sources, so you can skip the thousand-tab scavenger hunt. Grab your coffee. We have some catching up to do! ☕

A little heads-up, sweet friend: Part One in this series comes around the middle of the month, and Part Two comes at the end. You can pop in for whichever stories matter to you, then come back for the rest of the month’s updates.

Hey You! Short on Time? I’ve Got You. 💋

Don’t feel like reading the whole roundup? That’s okay, friend! I’ve gathered the headlines, helpful updates, and conversations worth knowing in one place so you don’t have to bounce between a dozen websites. Pick the topic that interests you most and jump right in. Or grab your coffee and stay for the whole thing. You never know what little nugget you’ll find!

🔥 Hot Off the Press: News Dropping Today!

📱 From Bag Phones to the iPhone Duo: Apple’s Foldable iPhone Arrives Today

Friend, I remember when having a bag phone was a BIG deal. You know the one. It had a cord, an antenna, and its own bag. We were out here carrying our phones like an extra purse and thinking we were living in the future! 😂

Now Apple’s iPhone Duo arrives in stores today, October 23, 2026. It opens into a 7.6-inch display, has a 5.4-inch screen on the outside, and starts at $1,999. That’s right, almost two thousand dollars for a phone that folds. For that price, I need it to fold the laundry, too.

One heads-up: Apple has very few walk-in phones on launch day, so most people will need to preorder.

Technology has gotten smaller, but the bills certainly haven’t. 😂 Who else remembers the bag phone? And would you spend that much on a foldable iPhone?

🚗 Tesla's Flying Car (Sort Of)

Elon Musk finally showed off the new Tesla Roadster at a live event in Texas, and yes, it left the ground. It launched off a ramp, hopped over a row of parked cars and landed on its wheels, powered by high-pressure air thrusters. Nobody was driving it. It was a pre-programmed demo, and it was only in the air for a few seconds. Musk says production starts in 2028. No price yet. And in the same week, Florida Polytechnic University in Lakeland showed off a flying police vehicle that is still waiting on FAA approval. Flying cars are officially having a moment. I will believe it when I see one in the carpool line.

John Stamos joins the cast, along with Dale Dickey and Kim Matula. Mark your calendar for November 26. Yes, that is Thanksgiving Day, so plan your pie and your binge accordingly. 🥧 Honestly, Thanksgiving already comes with enough family drama. Apparently Netflix wanted a seat at the table too.

💎 Kylie Jenner's $50 Million Victoria's Secret Fantasy Bra

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show took over Los Angeles on October 18, and Kylie Jenner made a surprise runway debut wearing the Fantasy Bra, a diamond-covered piece valued at $50 million, the most expensive one ever made. Not everyone was cheering. A lot of fans called it a nepo baby moment and said the bra should have gone to a career model. But here is the part I loved: Adriana Lima, who wore the Fantasy Bra back in 2014, walked that runway again at 45. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley walked too, and Barbara Palvin made her return after having a baby. So I have to ask. Who deserves the spotlight: the newcomer with the famous last name, or the women who have been doing the work for 20 years? And can we agree that $50 million is a lot of money for something I would still complain about having to wear all day?

💃 Dancing with the Stars Season 35

Official page / source: See Dancing with the Stars on ABC

Dancing with the Stars is heating up. After Dedication Night, Ezra Frech and Daniella Karagach lead the season by a single point over Amber Glenn and Pasha Pashkov. And Jenna Dewan, in her mid-40s, scored a 37 out of 40 with Alan Bersten. Midlife is not slowing down, friends. Halloween Night is next, with Shirley Ballas as a guest judge and a double elimination, since nobody went home last week.

🕯️ The TV Stars We Lost This Fall

This part hit me in the heart, because so many of these faces were part of our living rooms growing up.

  • Dennis Haskins, 75: Mr. Belding on Saved by the Bell. "Hey, hey, hey, what is going on here?" If you grew up in the 90s, you heard it in his voice. (Late September)

  • Robert Kelker-Kelly, 62: Bo Brady on Days of Our Lives from 1992 to 1995. Soap fans, I know.

  • Mike Ditka, 86: The legendary Chicago Bears coach and Hall of Famer, who also popped up on Cheers, Coach and Entourage.

  • Amber Siyavus, 46: Big Brother Season 8 houseguest.

  • RJ Mitte, 34: Walter White Jr. on Breaking Bad, and a powerful advocate for people with disabilities.

  • Betty McGuire, 100: Grandma Kate Malone on Growing Pains.

Hug your people. Call the friend you have been meaning to call. Life is short, and none of it is promised.

🎵 One Phone, One Song, Millions of Likes

Remember this one? Back in February 2024, Australian creator Leah Halton turned a simple car lip-sync to YG Marley’s “Praise Jah in the Moonlight” into one of the most-liked TikToks of all time, with about 77 million likes, and it is still making the rounds. And here I am checking my lighting, rewriting a caption fourteen times, and hoping the algorithm remembers I exist. 😂

👻 Things We’re Ghosting in October

Instagram has been full of people sharing what they’re ghosting this October: habits, expectations, and things they are simply done carrying. Friend, I have a list. People-pleasing? Ghosted. Feeling guilty for saying no? Goodbye. Jeans that require a deep breath before sitting down? Blocked. And believing we should have our whole lives figured out by midlife? Please. 😂

🎙️ Speaking of ghosting, you’ll want to catch next week’s episode of Just Jelly Unfiltered! I’m sitting down with Maria from The Pretty Truth to talk about the things we’re ghosting in midlife. Some of those old expectations have overstayed their welcome, friend. 😂

🎧 Psst… you get first dibs! I’m bringing a little early-access perk right here to Just Jelly Unfiltered. My plan is to share new episodes here on Mondays through YouTube, before they arrive on Spotify Tuesday mornings. Think of it as your little inside-circle invitation: come grab your coffee and join me a day early. 💋

💗 Christina Applegate and the Conversation About Misdiagnosis

On October 20, on her podcast MeSsy, Christina Applegate shared that doctors now say she was misdiagnosed with MS five years ago, and that she still does not know what is causing her symptoms. Her story has sparked another important conversation online about misdiagnosis and what it takes to advocate for yourself when answers are hard to find. I wrote a deeper Backstage Conversation about her experience and the broader issue of medical misdiagnosis. If you’ve ever felt unheard while searching for answers, I hope you’ll read it.

🎃 Halloween, Runway Jokes and Everything Else

Halloween costumes and spooky sounds are everywhere, while Victoria’s Secret runway parody videos have creators joking about why they won’t be walking this year. Apparently, the internet can turn just about anything into a group project. And honestly, sometimes that’s exactly the laugh we need.

🩺 Medicare Open Enrollment 2027: What Is Changing

Official page / source: Compare Medicare plans on Medicare.gov

Open enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, and this is your window to switch plans for 2027. Changes start January 1. A few things are shifting. The yearly out-of-pocket cap on prescription drugs (Part D) goes up to $2,400, up from $2,100. The standard drug deductible goes up from $615 to $700. And new Medicare-negotiated prices kick in for 15 drugs, including Ozempic and Wegovy. If you are on Medicare, or you help a parent with theirs, now is the time to compare plans instead of letting them auto-renew. This is one of those adulting tasks that deserves a calendar reminder and maybe a second cup of coffee.

🏥 Not on Medicare Yet? ACA Open Enrollment Starts November 1

Official page / source: Visit the official Health Insurance Marketplace

If you are in your 40s, 50s or early 60s and buy your own health insurance, your window is coming. Open enrollment on HealthCare.gov runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027 in most states. Enroll by December 15 if you want coverage to start January 1. Some states run on different dates, so check your state's marketplace.

💰 Social Security 2027 Raise and the Early November SSI Payment

While we are talking about money and our parents, two more things. First, Social Security announced a 3.6% cost-of-living raise (COLA) for 2027. For the average retiree, that is about $75 more a month, going from about $2,095 to $2,170, starting in January. Just know the 2027 Medicare Part B premium has not been announced yet. It usually comes out in November and gets taken out of that check, so part of the raise may get eaten up.

Second, if you or someone you love gets SSI (Supplemental Security Income), the November payment is coming early. November 1 falls on a Sunday, so November's SSI payment arrives Friday, October 30. That means two deposits in October, but it is not extra money. It is November's money showing up early, so budget it to last all month. The same thing happens again at the end of the year: the January 2027 payment arrives December 31 because of New Year's Day. Regular Social Security payments are not affected.

🔥 New Menopause Guidelines From ACOG

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) updated its menopause guidance, and it is a big deal. It now strongly recommends hormone therapy for hot flashes and the sleep problems that come with them, for women without health reasons to avoid it. Timing matters: ideally starting before 60 or within 10 years of menopause. It also lists nonhormonal options, recommends things like exercise, CBT and mindfulness, and says the evidence does not support herbal supplements. Perfect timing, since October is World Menopause Awareness Month. Another study presented this month found that women on semaglutide (Wegovy or Ozempic) who also used hormone therapy lost more weight, though the researchers say it is early and hormone therapy should not be prescribed just for weight loss. Translation? You are allowed to walk into your doctor's office and ask for real help. Bring your questions.

💉 Personalized Cancer Vaccine Shows Promising Results

This one gave me chills, in a good way. Moderna and Merck announced results from a large Phase 3 trial of a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, built from each patient's own tumor. In more than 1,100 people who had high-risk melanoma removed by surgery, adding the vaccine to the immunotherapy drug Keytruda cut the risk of the cancer coming back by 42% at two years. It is not approved yet, and the companies are now talking with regulators. Similar vaccines are being tested for lung, kidney and pancreatic cancers. Hope is allowed.

⚠️ Compounded GLP-1 Recall: Check Your Vials

If you get compounded tirzepatide (the same active ingredient as Mounjaro and Zepbound) from a compounding pharmacy, read this one. The FDA classified a recall this month of compounded tirzepatide vials made by Apothecary Pharma in North Carolina, because the FDA says it cannot be sure the vials are sterile. No illnesses have been reported. Check your vial or pharmacy records, stop using any affected product, and call your pharmacist or prescriber. Get medical advice if you notice fever, redness, swelling or worsening pain after an injection.

🤧 Flu Season: A New Flu Shot Option for Adults 50+

Flu season is here, and this year there is something new. The FDA approved Moderna's mFLUSIVA, the first mRNA flu vaccine in the U.S., for adults 50 and older, and it is rolling out to select pharmacies for this season. Ask your doctor or pharmacist which flu shot is right for you, and do not wait until the holidays when everyone is coughing at the dinner table.

🛒 Walmart+ and Sam's Club $120 Bundle vs. Amazon Prime

Walmart and Sam's Club launched a combined membership for $120 a year. You get Walmart+ and Sam's Club Plus together, which includes free delivery from both, a streaming pick (Peacock Premium or Paramount+ Essential), 10 cents off a gallon of gas, and 2% back in Sam's Cash. For comparison, Walmart+ alone is $98, Sam's Club Plus alone is $120, and Amazon Prime is $139. So yes, it is cheaper than Prime. The catch: it is annual only, with no monthly option or free trial, and only the primary Sam's Club member can activate the Walmart+ part. Already a Sam's Club Plus member? You get Walmart+ at no extra cost. I love a deal, but I also love reading the fine print before I declare myself a financial genius.

🚙 Which State Pays the Most for Car Insurance?

My Florida friends, sit down for this one. According to ValuePenguin's 2026 report, Florida is the third most expensive state for full coverage car insurance, at about $311 a month, roughly 50% above the national average of $208. Only Nevada and Louisiana pay more. The small bit of good news? Nationally, rates are expected to rise less than 1% this year, the smallest increase since 2022, and more than half of states should actually see rates go down. If you have not shopped your policy in a while, this is your sign.

✈️ Getting Ready to Travel for the Holiday Season

✈️ Holiday Airfare: Is Anyone Else Getting Sticker Shock?

Official page / source: Read the October 2026 holiday airfare report | Hopper's 2026 Holiday Travel Index

Friend, I am heading to Breckenridge, and I have already noticed how quickly the travel expenses are adding up. Apparently, my winter getaway budget decided it wanted a vacation of its own. Between flights, accommodations and all those little extras, I am starting to wonder whether the snow comes with a payment plan. 😂

Holiday airfare forecasts shared this month point to pricier Thanksgiving and Christmas flights. Hopper’s 2026 Holiday Travel Index puts the average domestic round-trip fare at $402 for Thanksgiving, up 31% from last year, and $452 for Christmas, up 23%. Airfares also change constantly, so your actual price will depend on the route and booking date.

📅 The Travel Date Shuffle

If your schedule has wiggle room, compare the days around your holiday instead of searching only one departure and return date. The Sunday after Thanksgiving, November 29, is often a busy travel day. Hopper says returning that Sunday averages about $604 round trip, while a Monday or Tuesday return averages about $350. That is real money. And if your family can handle a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day flight, compare those options too. Just remember, the cheapest ticket is not always the best deal once bags, seat selection and the possibility of delays enter the chat.

🧳 Airport Rules, Delays and the Fine Print

Before you head out, check your airline’s current cancellation and rebooking policies, TSA guidance, and airport advisories. And please, give yourself extra airport time. Running through a terminal with a coffee, a carry-on and zero patience is nobody’s idea of holiday magic.

My holiday travel reminder: price out the entire trip, check flexible dates, know what your fare includes and leave some room in the budget for the unexpected. Breckenridge, I am coming for the mountain memories. My credit card and I are still discussing the details. ❄️

🧹 Airbnb's New Checkout Rules: No More Chores

Official page / source: Read Airbnb checkout-rule coverage

Raise your hand if you have ever spent the last hour of your vacation stripping beds and hauling trash. 🙋‍♀️ Airbnb is putting a stop to it. For reservations booked on or after November 20, hosts can no longer require guests to strip the beds, wash and put away dishes, start laundry or take the trash out of the property. Hosts can still ask for simple things, like putting used dishes in the sink, and special requests like saving water during a drought or using bear-proof trash cans. Not every host is happy about it, and some are calling it a move toward a hotel model. But if you are booking holiday travel, this one is good news for you.

🥸 Do Not Forget: November Is Movember

Next month, you are going to see a lot of mustaches, and there is a reason. Movember started in Australia in 2003, when a couple of friends decided to grow mustaches for November and tie it to men's health. Now it is a worldwide movement focused on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's mental health and suicide prevention. Men grow a mustache all month to get the conversation started. And the rest of us? We can be the ones who say it out loud. Ask the men in your life when they last had a checkup. Your husband, your brother, your dad, your son, your friend. Sometimes the bravest thing is going from silent to spoken. And if you or someone you love is struggling, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
