Thanksgiving in New York City 2026: Where to Eat, Stay and Play

The 100th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, parade-view hotels, Thanksgiving dinner and Home Alone 2 fun

Jenn standing beside a helicopter on a Manhattan helipad, hung above five Polaroid snapshots of New York City at the holidays among fall leaves and pumpkins: the Statue of Liberty, Jenn looking up at the city skyline at night, Jenn by a Christmas tree in the Oculus, the Rockefeller Center tree and rink, and Radio City Music Hall lit up for Christmas.

Hey you, it’s me! 💋

Gobble, Gobble & Wobble, Bestie! Thanksgiving Takes Manhattan! 🦃

Oh, how I love taking a bite out of the Big Apple during the holiday season! I’ve been to New York City several times for Christmas, and I swear, that city knows how to put on a show. The twinkling lights, decorated storefronts, and everyone rushing around with shopping bags like they’re auditioning for a holiday movie. And the Christmas windows? I could spend hours looking at those things!

But here’s my little confession: Thanksgiving in New York is still on my midlife bucket list. So is ringing in the New Year in Times Square. I was thinking next year for both, but who am I kidding? I own a suitcase and have a tendency to say, “Why not?” Heck, I might be on a plane next week. LOL! ✈️

And this year is a big one: the 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Can you imagine watching those enormous balloons float between the skyscrapers? Although, knowing me, I’d be equally concerned about finding a bathroom after drinking all that coffee. 😂

Whether you’re planning a family trip, a romantic escape, or a holiday with your four-legged bestie, this is my Thanksgiving in New York City 2026 guide: the 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, where to watch for free, parade-view hotels, Thanksgiving dinner in NYC, Home Alone 2 fun for the kids, Christmas magic before December, and all the practical things nobody wants to figure out while standing on a cold sidewalk.

Because sometimes Thanksgiving means trading the turkey baster for a boarding pass, the kitchen chaos for Christmas magic, and grabbing a slice of apple pie in the Big Apple. 🍎🥧 Grab your coffee, bestie. We’re taking Thanksgiving to Manhattan!

The 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade 2026

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is Thursday, November 26, 2026, starting at 8:30 AM. This is the 100th parade, not its 100th birthday: it began in 1924 but paused from 1942 through 1944.

The 2026 route map had not been posted when I checked. In 2025, the parade started near West 77th Street and Central Park West, passed Columbus Circle and Central Park South, then headed down Sixth Avenue to Macy’s Herald Square. Check the official parade FAQ for the final 2026 route before you go.

Where to Watch the Macy’s Parade for Free

These are the 2025 public viewing areas. Confirm the 2026 map before you pick your spot.

Area Best for Good to know
Central Park West, about W 75th to 63rd Families who want early balloon views West side only in 2025. Arrive very early.
Central Park South Couples and pretty backdrops South side only in 2025
Sixth Avenue, about W 59th to 38th Families and easy subway access Both sides in 2025; the parade arrives later
Herald Square and Columbus Circle Not public viewing Grandstands are not sold to the public

Jenn’s tip 💋: Do not build your morning around crossing the parade route. Choose your side in advance, arrive early, dress for standing still, and assume bathrooms will be hard to find. In 2025, strollers, pets, chairs, coolers, umbrellas and large bags were not allowed in viewing areas, so check the 2026 list.

Thanksgiving Eve: Macy’s Balloon Inflation

The night-before balloon inflation around the American Museum of Natural History on the Upper West Side is set for Wednesday, November 25. 2026 hours were not announced yet. In 2025, the line opened at noon, viewing ran from 1 to 6 PM, and the entrance was at West 72nd Street and Columbus Avenue. Expect lines and crowds, and check the official rules before you go.

Parade-View Hotels in NYC for Thanksgiving

Not everyone dreams of standing outside before sunrise. For families with little kids, grandparents, or anyone who prefers a warm coffee and a real bathroom, a parade-view hotel can be the splurge that makes the trip. But read the fine print: a hotel ON the route is not the same as a room WITH a guaranteed parade view.

  • New York Hilton Midtown, Sixth Avenue: Offers 2026 parade-view room packages from about $1,095 to $4,225, with four- to five-night minimums.
  • Mandarin Oriental, New York, Columbus Circle: Luxury with select parade-facing rooms. Ask about 2026 view availability.
  • JW Marriott Essex House, Central Park South: Ask about parade-view rooms and packages.
  • Warwick New York: A classic hotel with a Macy’s shopping package. Ask about view suites.
  • Residence Inn Times Square: Suites with kitchens and breakfast, great for families. Confirm whether your room has a view.

Ask which floor, which window, whether viewing is from the room or a separate event space, and whether the rate requires a multi-night stay.

Where to Stay in NYC: Pick Your Neighborhood

Neighborhood Best for Trade-off
Upper West Side Parade-first families and Central Park Fewer Midtown attractions within walking distance
Midtown and Sixth Avenue Parade-view hotels, Broadway, first-timers Crowds and premium holiday rates
Central Park South Romantic splurges and iconic views Expensive, with limited view rooms
Bryant Park and Herald Square Shopping, the Winter Village and transit Busy, with some parade restrictions
Downtown and Tribeca A quieter base and pet-friendly hotels A longer trip to the parade

Family booking checklist: connecting rooms or suites, breakfast, stroller storage, elevator access, a parade-view guarantee, cancellation terms, and whether kids can attend any hotel viewing event.

Where to Eat Thanksgiving Dinner in NYC

Let’s talk turkey, and apple pie. You can absolutely celebrate without washing a single dish.

Confirmed for 2026: - Keens Steakhouse, Herald Square: A classic old New York splurge. $167 for adults, $83 for kids under 12. - Virgil’s Real BBQ, Times Square: A budget-friendly Thanksgiving turkey plate for $49.95.

Worth calling about (these have offered Thanksgiving menus in past years; 2026 prices were not posted yet when I checked): - The Smith, Lincoln Square: A lively family meal on the Upper West Side, near the parade. - Nice Matin, Upper West Side: A post-parade three-course option. - Docks Oyster Bar, Midtown East: Traditional favorites plus the regular menu. - Hearth, East Village: A family-style holiday feast. - Celestine, DUMBO, Brooklyn: A romantic skyline setting. - Manhatta, Financial District: Special-occasion views. - Essex, Lower East Side: A vegan-friendly holiday option.

Jenn’s pick 💋: For families, I’d start with The Smith or Docks. For a romantic splurge, look at Celestine or Manhatta. For old-school New York, check Keens.

Thanksgiving prix-fixe menus may replace regular menus, kids’ pricing depends on age, some restaurants add service charges, and late cancellations can be expensive. Leave a generous gap between the parade and dinner, especially if you need to cross Midtown.

Home Alone 2 in NYC: Thanksgiving With Kids

Listen, bestie, I love a beautiful dinner and a fancy hotel as much as anyone. But if you’re bringing kids to New York, they deserve their own movie-magic moment. And what better inspiration than Home Alone 2: Lost in New York? We’re recreating the fun, not the part where Kevin gets left behind. Count your children before leaving the hotel. 😂

The Kids’ “Lost in New York (But Not Really!)” Bucket List

  • See the outside of The Plaza Hotel, the famous Home Alone 2 landmark.
  • Walk through Central Park and find Gapstow Bridge, a famous movie spot.
  • Visit FAO Schwarz at 30 Rockefeller Plaza and look for the giant piano. Check holiday hours.
  • Skate at Rockefeller Center or the Bryant Park Winter Village.
  • See the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Family-friendly showtimes sell out.
  • Visit Macy’s Santaland. Free reservations open November 20, and you will want one.
  • Turn the holiday windows into a scavenger hunt: find a toy, a reindeer, a snowflake and the funniest display in the city.

A little parent-to-parent travel wisdom: give every child one activity they get to choose, build in a warm-up stop, and do not schedule every hour. Sometimes the hot chocolate and the unexpected detour become the favorite memory.

Things to Do in NYC at Thanksgiving: Christmas Magic Before December

Experience 2026 dates Planning tip
Radio City Christmas Spectacular Nov 4, 2026, to Jan 4, 2027 Reserve a family-friendly show

Rockefeller Center Christmas tree Arrives Nov 7; lit Wed, Dec 2 Not lit during Thanksgiving weekend
Bryant Park Winter Village Opened Oct 28 Free admission; holiday shops and skating

Important: The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting is December 2, after Thanksgiving weekend. You can visit the rink and see the tree, but do not promise the kids a fully lit tree in November.

See NYC From Above: A Helicopter Ride Over the City

Oh, New York! 🗽❤️ There’s just something about seeing the city from above. Looking out at the Statue of Liberty, watching the hustle and bustle of the streets below, and seeing just how much life is happening all around you. It’s one of those moments when you realize why they call it the city that never sleeps. There’s just nothing quite like New York City!

Black Friday in NYC

Friday, November 27, is for shopping, if that’s your kind of cardio! Macy’s Herald Square and Santaland 2026 hours were not announced yet, so check before you set an alarm. Shop the 34th Street windows, Fifth Avenue, Bryant Park and the Grand Central Holiday Fair.

Jenn’s shopping strategy: Families, book the Santaland slot first and plan around it. Couples, save the windows and lights for an evening walk. Everyone, pack an extra tote or leave room in the suitcase.

Shopping from your sofa instead? See my Walmart Black Friday 2026 guide and all my Shop Till You Drop deals.

Dog-Friendly NYC at Thanksgiving: Paws in the City 🐾

Yes, your fur baby can come to New York, but the parade is not the place to improvise. Pets were not allowed in parade viewing areas in 2025, so plan around the 2026 rules. A pet-friendly hotel does not automatically mean your dog can stay alone in the room while you watch the parade.

Stay Why it works Good to know
Kimpton Hotel Eventi, Chelsea Any size or breed No extra pet fee
Kimpton Theta, Midtown West All pets welcome No pet fee
1 Hotel Central Park Near Sixth Avenue Pets up to 25 pounds, up to two
The Roxy Hotel, Tribeca A quieter downtown base Confirm pet limits
Club Quarters Grand Central Convenient Midtown East base Confirm size limits

Central Park off-leash hours are 6 to 9 AM and 9 PM to 1 AM, in designated areas only. The rest of the day, dogs stay on a leash. See the Central Park dog guide. On the subway, dogs must ride in a bag or carrier (MTA pet rules), so plan ahead for a big pup.

Getting Around NYC at Thanksgiving: Airports, Subways and Parade Closures

The subway is usually the easiest choice on parade morning. Driving and rideshares near the route can be delayed or blocked by closures, which may begin Wednesday. Check MTA service notices and NYPD street closures the week of Thanksgiving.

Airport Getting to Manhattan Good to know
JFK AirTrain ($8.75) plus subway, or a taxi Taxi flat fare is $70, about $76.75 with surcharges, plus tolls and tip
LaGuardia (LGA) Taxi, rideshare, or the free Q70 bus to the subway No direct train
Newark (EWR) AirTrain plus NJ Transit to Penn Station Shuttle buses are replacing part of the AirTrain on some days. Check the NJ Transit notice before you fly.

What to pack: layers, a warm hat, gloves, comfortable waterproof shoes, a portable charger, and a small bag.

A Five-Day NYC Thanksgiving Itinerary
