Hey you, it’s me! 💋
Gobble, Gobble & Wobble, Bestie! It’s Turkey Time! 🦃
Before we talk turkey, mountain cabins, and twinkling Christmas lights, I have a confession: I’ve been traveling to the Smoky Mountains since I was a little girl. And apparently, no family vacation in the ’90s was complete without dressing everyone up for one of those old-timey Western photos.
Please tell me my family wasn’t the only one! You know the studios: someone hands Dad a cowboy hat, everybody crowds into a saloon scene, and suddenly your family looks like it’s wanted in three counties. My dad was convinced he’d been an outlaw in a previous life. LOL! 🤠
I wouldn’t trade those silly pictures or the memories behind them. Somewhere between the winding mountain roads and those family traditions, the Smokies became one of those places that feels like coming home.
And Thanksgiving might be one of the best times to go. You can wake up to mountain views, share a feast you cooked yourself (or happily let someone else handle the dishes), and spend the evening surrounded by Christmas lights. Whether you’re sneaking away as a couple, bringing the whole crew, or packing up the fur babies, this is my Thanksgiving in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge 2026 guide: where to eat Thanksgiving dinner, where to stay, Dollywood and holiday lights, the national park, dog-friendly tips, and a five-day itinerary.
Grab your coffee, your stretchy pants, and your warmest jacket. We’re heading back to the Smokies, bestie!

Quick Picks: Thanksgiving in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge 2026
Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026. This guide covers Wednesday, November 25, through Sunday, November 29.
| If you want… | Go to |
|---|---|
| A confirmed Thanksgiving dinner | The Park Grill, Gatlinburg |
| To pick your home base | Gatlinburg vs. Pigeon Forge |
| Christmas lights and Dollywood | Where to play |
| A morning in the national park | Great Smoky Mountains National Park |
| To bring the dog | Dog-friendly Smokies |
| Black Friday shopping | Shopping in the Smokies |
| A ready-made plan | Five-day itinerary |
Good to know: Holiday lights are already up, but the Dollywood theme park is closed on Thanksgiving Day. Book lodging and dinner as early as you can, and double-check holiday hours before you head out.
Gatlinburg vs. Pigeon Forge: Where Should You Stay for Thanksgiving?
The two towns are only about 7 miles apart, roughly 15 minutes in light traffic, but Thanksgiving traffic can make that trip much longer. The better question is not which town wins. It is which one makes the right home base for you.
| Gatlinburg | Pigeon Forge | |
|---|---|---|
| The vibe | Cozy, walkable mountain village | Lively Parkway with big attractions |
| Best for | Couples, park lovers, downtown strolls | Families, Dollywood, shows, value |
| Getting around | Park once and walk downtown | Drive or use the local trolley |
| Highlights | Anakeesta, SkyPark, Ober Mountain | Dollywood, The Island, The Old Mill |
| Dogs | Gatlinburg Trail and select patios | City parks, The Island grounds, pet-friendly hotels |
Jenn’s pick: Why choose just one? A cabin between the towns gives you space for a Thanksgiving meal and easy access to both. Or choose Pigeon Forge for entertainment and spend a day strolling Gatlinburg. Staying longer? The Gatlinburg Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade is Friday, December 4, 2026, at 7:30 PM, the week after Thanksgiving.
Where to Stay in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge for Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving-week prices change quickly, so I’m skipping “from” prices here. Confirm availability, pet rules, and cancellation terms directly before you book.
For Couples: Mountain Views and Mistletoe
- Hotel Indigo Gatlinburg Downtown: A boutique stay for couples who want to walk to downtown dining and lights. Dog-friendly, with a $75 pet fee per stay.
- Margaritaville Island Hotel, Pigeon Forge: Ideal if your idea of romance includes dinner and an evening stroll around The Island.
- The Lodge at Buckberry Creek, Gatlinburg: A secluded mountain-lodge feel with fireplaces and terraces. Call 865-263-4300 to confirm Thanksgiving availability before you plan around it.
For Families: Room for Everyone
- Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa: Easy for a Dollywood-centered trip, with family amenities.
- Dollywood’s HeartSong Lodge and Resort: Another family-focused Dollywood home base.
- Compass Hotel by Margaritaville, Pigeon Forge: A family-friendly option with breakfast and pools.
- A roomy cabin: My favorite pick for families gathering around a Thanksgiving table. Look for a full kitchen, enough bathrooms, a hot tub or game room, and parking for everyone.
For Pet Parents: Pack the Leashes
- Compass Hotel by Margaritaville: Up to two dogs, 75 pounds each, with a one-time $100 fee per dog plus tax. Dog-friendly rooms are limited, so tell them ahead.
- Hampton Inn Gatlinburg: Up to two dogs or cats, 75 pounds, $75 per pet for one to four nights.
- Margaritaville Island Hotel: Up to two dogs at $50 per night per dog plus tax, which adds up over a holiday weekend.
- Hotel Indigo Gatlinburg Downtown: $75 per pet per stay.
- A fenced-yard cabin: Often the easiest choice for bigger dogs and multiple pets. Read each rental’s weight, breed, and unattended-pet rules.
Dollywood’s DreamMore and HeartSong resorts do not allow pets, except service animals.
Where to Eat Thanksgiving Dinner in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge
Here’s where the planning really matters. Only some restaurants had posted 2026 Thanksgiving details when I checked, so I’m separating confirmed offerings from favorites still waiting on their holiday announcements.
The Park Grill, Gatlinburg: Best Confirmed Sit-Down Feast
The Park Grill is serving its 2026 Thanksgiving feast on Thursday, November 26, starting at 11:30 AM until the turkey runs out. It is $32 per adult plate and $17 per child plate, and the salad bar is extra ($10 adults, $8 kids 12 and under). The regular menu runs until 9 PM. Reservations open three weeks before Thanksgiving, around November 5. This is my first call for a traditional holiday meal without the kitchen cleanup.
Mama’s Farmhouse, Pigeon Forge: Family-Style Favorite
Mama’s Farmhouse has posted a 2026 Thanksgiving menu. It uses a waitlist instead of reservations (groups can call 800-992-9780). Call 865-908-4646 for holiday hours and prices.
Dollywood Resort Thanksgiving Buffets
Song and Hearth at DreamMore (noon to 8 PM) and HeartSong Lodge (noon to 5 PM) both list 2026 Thanksgiving buffets, but both were already at capacity when I checked. DreamMore says Thanksgiving reservations are still open at Ember and Elm at HeartSong. See the Dollywood resort buffets.
Worth a Phone Call
- Ober Mountain, Gatlinburg: In past years, its Thanksgiving buffet came with mountain views and live music, and it sold out. 2026 details were not posted yet. Call 865-436-5423.
- Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant, Sevierville: A Southern tradition known for apple fritters and apple butter. Call 865-428-1222 for 2026 holiday dining and takeout.
- The Old Mill Restaurant: Traditionally first-come, first-served. 2026 holiday hours were not posted yet.
- Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen: 2026 holiday details were not posted yet.
Cooking in? Make the cabin part of the tradition. Shop for groceries Wednesday, pack a few pantry essentials, and check whether the rental actually has a roasting pan, serving dishes, and enough chairs. Your mountain-view Thanksgiving does not need to be complicated to be memorable.
Things to Do in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge at Thanksgiving
Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas
Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas runs November 6, 2026, through January 3, 2027. The park is closed Thanksgiving Day, November 26, and open the days around it. Check the official Dollywood calendar for hours right before you go. If you arrive late Wednesday, save the park for Friday or Saturday instead of rushing.
Christmas Lights and Holiday Markets
- Pigeon Forge Winterfest: November 6, 2026, through January 31, 2027, with a free walking trail and driving light displays.
- Gatlinburg Winter Magic: Holiday lights all over downtown. Check the official page for 2026 dates.
- Anakeesta and Gatlinburg SkyPark: Mountaintop lights, scenic views, and memorable photo stops. Check admission and holiday hours.
- The Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community Thanksgiving Show: At the Gatlinburg Convention Center. Check the official page for 2026 dates.
- The Island in Pigeon Forge: Shopping, dining, and an easy evening walk among holiday lights.
Other Family Favorites
Mix in a dinner show like Dolly Parton’s Stampede or Hatfield and McCoy, explore The Old Mill Square, or head up to Ober Mountain for views and seasonal fun. Buy tickets ahead during Thanksgiving week.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park at Thanksgiving
The national park is open on Thanksgiving, and there is no entrance fee. If you park for more than 15 minutes, though, you need a parking tag: $5 daily, $15 weekly, or $40 annual. For a Wednesday to Sunday trip, the $15 weekly tag is the easy choice.
| Scenic drive | Thanksgiving-week note |
|---|---|
| Cades Cove Loop | Open sunrise to sunset. Arrive early to avoid long lines. |
| Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail | Open through November 29, weather permitting. |
| Newfound Gap Road | Open year-round, but snow and ice can close it with little notice. |
| Kuwohi Road | Open through November 29, then closes for the season. |
| Little River Road | Typically open year-round, weather permitting. |
Mountain weather changes fast. Check the National Park Service road status the morning you go, especially for higher elevations. A scenic drive can be just as wonderful as a hike, especially when the whole family is along for the ride.
Paws in the Pines: A Dog-Friendly Smokies Thanksgiving 🐾
You know I’m not leaving the fur babies out of the travel plans. The Smokies can be a fun dog-friendly getaway, but there are a few important rules to know before loading up the car.
- In the national park, leashed dogs are allowed on roads, in picnic areas, and in campgrounds. Only two trails allow dogs: the Gatlinburg Trail and the Oconaluftee River Trail, on a leash 6 feet or shorter. See the park’s pet rules.
- The Gatlinburg Trail: A lovely Thanksgiving morning stroll with your pup, right near town.
- Patriot Park and Wear Farm City Park, Pigeon Forge: Good local walking options. See Pigeon Forge parks.
- Gatlinburg SkyPark: Leashed dogs can ride the SkyLift with you.
- The Island in Pigeon Forge: Dogs may be welcome in common outdoor areas, but each shop and restaurant sets its own rules.
- Gatlinburg patios: Howard’s Steakhouse and Fox and Parrot Tavern are known for welcoming dogs outside. Call ahead, because patio policies can change.
A few fur-parent reminders: reserve a pet-approved room or cabin, bring waste bags and extra medication, and never assume you can leave a pet alone in a hotel room. If you plan a Dollywood day or dinner show, arrange pet care in advance. And yes, I want to see the dog-in-a-sweater mountain photos!
Black Friday in the Smokies: Where to Shop
If your idea of a post-turkey workout is shopping, I see you. Tanger Outlets Sevierville, 1645 Parkway, is a popular Black Friday stop. 2026 holiday hours were not posted yet, so check before you set an alarm.
For something more relaxed, browse The Old Mill shops, The Island, and Gatlinburg’s Arts and Crafts Community. Holiday markets may have limited dates and hours, so check before you drive over.

A Five-Day Smoky Mountain Thanksgiving Itinerary

| Thursday, Nov 26: Gratitude and Gravy | A quiet mountain overlook, a scenic drive, or a leashed walk on the Gatlinburg Trail. Then your Thanksgiving dinner, out or at the cabin. End with a stroll among the lights. Dollywood is closed today. |
| Friday, Nov 27: Shop, Sip and Sparkle | Black Friday shopping if that’s your thing. Then explore Pigeon Forge and head to Dollywood or The Island and Winterfest. |
| Saturday, Nov 28: Mountain Memories | Drive Roaring Fork in the morning, browse Gatlinburg’s shops, and spend the afternoon at Anakeesta or SkyPark. Cap the night with a dinner show or leftovers and board games. |

Sometimes the best part of a trip is the ride home, when everybody starts retelling their favorite moments.
