Breckenridge Holiday Events 2026: Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve

The tree lighting, Race of the Santas, Ullr Fest, New Year's Eve fireworks, and where to stay and eat

Four Polaroid snapshots from Breckenridge, Colorado under twinkling holiday lights and falling snow: beef stew in a bread bowl at Burke and Riley's, snow-covered pine trees, two girls on snowboards at the top of a ski lift, and a helmet selfie of Jenn and her daughter.

Hey you, it’s me! 💋

Have you ever accidentally booked yourself into a Hallmark Christmas movie? Because I have!

I started going to Breckenridge, Colorado, back in December 2022, and my family absolutely loves this little mountain town. That first trip was with my girls. I had no idea when I booked it that we would arrive during the Lighting of Breckenridge, one of the most magical weekends of the year.

Picture this: snow falling, everyone gathered in the town square singing Christmas carols a cappella, and us holding our spiked coffees as the Christmas tree lit up the night sky. We ate, danced, sang, and skied. It was one of those moments you wish you could bottle up and keep forever.

Between you and me, I almost kept this little Hallmark Christmas town a secret. But when I find something magical, I have to share it. We are heading back December 4 to 7 this year, so I gathered the holiday dates, places to stay, winter adventures, restaurants, and practical travel tips in one place. This is my Breckenridge Holiday Events 2026 guide: the December 5 tree lighting, holiday events from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve, where to stay, where to eat, and how to get there from Denver.

Grab your coffee, pull up a chair, and come plan a little Christmas magic with me. ❄️

When Is the Breckenridge Tree Lighting in 2026?

The Lighting of Breckenridge and the Race of the Santas are on Saturday, December 5, 2026, on historic Main Street. The tree lights up at 5 PM at Blue River Plaza (203 S Main St), and the whole afternoon is free to watch. See the official event page for the final details.

This is the weekend that first made our family fall in love with Breckenridge. If you can time your trip for the lighting, give yourself the afternoon to wander downtown and enjoy every little moment.

Lighting of Breckenridge 2026 Schedule

Time What is happening
2 to 4 PM Race bib pickup at The Canteen, 208 N Main St
3:30 PM Holiday Dog Parade (line up at 3 PM)
4:00 PM Moose March, for ages 10 to 17
4:20 PM Race of the Santas
5:00 PM Tree lighting at Blue River Plaza, 203 S Main St
5:30 to 7 PM Meet Santa (location to be announced)

Race of the Santas 2026

Want to run down Main Street in a Santa suit? The Race of the Santas is $30 for adults 18 and older, and Santa suits are sold separately ($35, or $15 for a hat). Teens ages 10 to 17 can join the Moose March for $10. Register early, because spots and suits can run out.

Not running? Grab a hot cocoa, find a spot along Main Street, and cheer on the Santas. That is my favorite part!

Christmas in Breckenridge 2026

Christmas Day is Friday, December 25, 2026. Christmas week in Breckenridge means a decorated Main Street, skiing when conditions allow, cozy holiday dinners, and bookable winter fun like sleigh rides and dog sledding.

Ullr Fest 2026: December 17 to 19

Ullr Fest is Breckenridge’s quirky celebration of Ullr, the Norse god of snow, and 2026 marks its 63rd year. The free parade is Thursday, December 17, at 4 PM, followed by a community bonfire from 5 to 7 PM at the East Sawmill Lot. The famous Shotski is for ages 21 and older, with registration opening December 1.

Jenn’s tip: If Christmas Eve worship is important to your family, check local church calendars closer to your trip. Book special dinners and sleigh rides early, because Christmas week fills up fast.

Thanksgiving in Breckenridge 2026

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026. You can pair a mountain getaway with a holiday buffet, a take-home dinner, shopping, skating, and whatever early-season ski terrain is open.

If you would rather trade the kitchen for snowy mountain views, I understand completely! Here are the Thanksgiving dinners on our planning list.

Thanksgiving dinner What is offered Times and price
Beaver Run Resort Thanksgiving Feast A Thanksgiving feast in the Colorado Ballroom Seatings at 11 AM, 2:30 PM and 6 PM; $86 for adults and $30 for kids 12 and under, plus tax and gratuity

More resorts and restaurants post their Thanksgiving menus closer to the holiday, so check back with your favorites and book early.

Planning to cook in? A condo with a full kitchen can make a Thanksgiving gathering easier. After dinner, browse Main Street, try public skating, or take a walk through the historic district.

Jenn’s tip: Breckenridge Ski Resort plans to open November 6, but early-season skiing depends on snow. Check the lift and terrain reports instead of assuming the whole mountain will be open.

New Year’s Eve in Breckenridge 2026

What happens in Breckenridge on New Year’s Eve? On Thursday, December 31, 2026, Breckenridge celebrates with the kids’ Glow Worm Parade, the Peak 9 torchlight parade at 6 PM, and fireworks around 9:30 PM. See the official New Year’s Eve page for updates.

The Glow Worm Parade starts about an hour before the torchlight parade, and it is for kids who can ski a green run on their own. Check the resort’s rules and sign-up details before you promise anyone a spot.

For an easy view, the Peak 9 base area near Beaver Run is worth considering. Plan to arrive early, dress for mountain temperatures, and walk or ride the free buses where you can.

Things to Do in Breckenridge in Winter (Without Skiing)

Can you enjoy Breckenridge in winter without skiing? Absolutely. Sleigh rides, dog sledding, snowmobiling, Nordic trails, free sledding, galleries, ice skating, and Main Street shopping give you plenty to do off the lifts.

Snowy Adventures to Book Ahead

  • Dog sledding: Good Times Adventures runs dog sledding near Breckenridge. Holiday spots can sell out well in advance.
  • Snowmobiling: Guided tours range from easy to more adventurous. Check minimum ages and conditions when you book.
  • Horse-drawn sleigh rides: Golden Horseshoe sleigh rides are on my personal wish list for this December. Compare scenic rides, hot cocoa rides, and dinner packages.
  • Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing: Gold Run Nordic Center and Breckenridge Nordic Center groom trails when there is enough snow. Early December openings depend on snowfall.

More Winter Fun in Town

  • Skiing and snowboarding: Breckenridge spans five peaks, and the open terrain changes with conditions.
  • Ice skating: Check public skate times at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena.
  • Gold mine tour: Country Boy Mine offers a peek into Breckenridge’s mining past. Check winter tour times and age rules.
  • Main Street: Galleries, shops, holiday lights, and a warm drink in your hand. This is where the magic happens.

Free Things to Do in Breckenridge in Winter

  • Sledding at Carter Park: a free public sledding hill in town. Bring your own sled and check conditions first.
  • Free Ride buses and the Main Street trolley: Breckenridge’s Free Ride buses are free for everyone.
  • The Lighting of Breckenridge: the whole Dec 5 celebration is free to watch.
  • The Ullr Fest parade and bonfire: free and so much fun.
  • Window shopping and holiday lights on Main Street: free, and my favorite way to spend an evening.

A Breckenridge Christmas Weekend Itinerary (Our Family Plan)

This is our real family plan for December 4 to 7, 2026, with a mountain house as our home base. I love the idea of everyone having room to do their own thing, then gathering together for the holiday magic.

Day Our plan
Friday, Dec 4 Travel to Breckenridge, settle into the house, relax and enjoy family time.
Saturday, Dec 5, morning Flexible: ski, sightsee, sleep in, or enjoy the house.
Saturday, Dec 5, afternoon Main Street for the Lighting of Breckenridge: the dog parade, the Moose March, the Race of the Santas and the tree lighting.
Saturday, Dec 5, evening Our family Thanksgiving-and-Christmas dinner together.
Sunday, Dec 6 A free family day. We will choose based on the weather and everyone’s energy.
Monday, Dec 7 Check out and head home.

For your own trip, you can borrow the same rhythm: one big festive afternoon, one family dinner, and plenty of room to enjoy the mountains.

Best Restaurants in Breckenridge for the Holidays

Breckenridge has plenty of places for a cozy mountain meal. These are the restaurants I would put at the top of my list.

  • Burke and Riley’s Irish Pub, 520 S Main St: A casual favorite. The beef stew in a bread bowl is my favorite in Breckenridge. (That is the photo up top!)
  • Hearthstone, 130 S Ridge St: Rocky Mountain dining in a historic Victorian house. This is where our family plans to gather for our holiday dinner.
  • Rootstalk, 207 N Main St: A special-occasion dinner with seasonal cooking.
  • Radicato, 137 S Main St: Italian-inspired dining and handmade pasta.

Jenn’s tip: Make holiday dinner reservations early, especially around the December 5 lighting, Christmas week, and New Year’s Eve.

Where to Stay in Breckenridge for Christmas

The best place to stay depends on what you came to celebrate. I would choose walkability and being close to your main plans over the number of stars on a booking site.

Holiday Where I would stay Why
The Dec 5 lighting and Christmas Gravity Haus Breckenridge or Main Street Station (505 S Main St) Walk to the downtown lights and holiday fun
Christmas with a bigger family Grand Colorado on Peak 8 or Grand Lodge on Peak 7 Condo-style space and mountain access
Thanksgiving Beaver Run Resort or Hotel Alpenrock Peak 9 access, and the Beaver Run Thanksgiving Feast
Thanksgiving, cooking in One Ski Hill Place Condo kitchens and extra space
New Year’s Eve Beaver Run Resort or Hotel Alpenrock Close to the Peak 9 torchlight parade and fireworks

Peak holiday prices can be high, and rates change by date and room. Check real-time pricing, fees, parking, minimum stays, and cancellation policies before you book.

How to Get From Denver Airport to Breckenridge

Do you need a rental car in Breckenridge? Not necessarily. Breckenridge is about 104 miles from Denver International Airport, or about 2 to 2.5 hours in good weather. Winter traffic and snow can add a lot of time, so a shuttle is often the easiest way to go.

Epic Mountain Express shared shuttles start at $49 per person to the Breckenridge Station transfer center, and door-to-door rides run about $59 to $129. Other shuttle companies to compare include Summit Express, Peak 1 Express and Fresh Tracks Transportation. See the full list on the official Breckenridge transportation page. Check current fares, pickup spots and flight-delay policies before you book.

Getting Around Breckenridge Without a Car

  • Breckenridge Free Ride: free town buses, including the Main Street trolley.
  • Summit Stage: free regional buses to nearby Summit County towns like Frisco.
  • BreckConnect Gondola: a scenic ride from town up toward Peaks 7 and 8. Check current hours before you go.
  • Parking: Use the current official parking maps, and expect to pay in most lots.
  • If you drive: Check Colorado’s winter traction and chain laws, road conditions, and your lodging’s parking fees.

Jenn’s tip: For a December 5 tree-lighting trip, I would choose a walkable property or a shuttle-friendly rental. That afternoon is the last time I want to be hunting for parking!

Breckenridge Travel Tips: Altitude, Weather and What to Pack

  • Altitude: Breckenridge sits at about 9,600 feet. Take it easy your first day, drink plenty of water, and pay attention to how you feel.
  • Winter weather: Snow is common but never guaranteed on a specific date. Check the forecast and the lift and trail reports right before you go.
  • What to pack: Waterproof boots, warm layers, gloves, a hat, lip balm, sunscreen, and traction cleats for icy sidewalks.
  • Book early: Reserve holiday lodging, dinners, dog sledding, and sleigh rides as early as you can.
  • Family needs: Check shuttle access, stairs, and any age or skill rules for kids’ activities before you book.
