How Do I Start Over at 40 When I Feel Lost?

Starting over sounds cute until you are the one standing in the middle of the boxes.

Hey you, it is me.

My top search this month has been the same one I keep whispering to myself. How do I start over at 40? And honestly, starting over sounds cute until you are the one standing in the middle of the boxes.

Nobody talks enough about how strange it feels when your old life no longer fits and your new life has not introduced itself yet. You can be excited and terrified. Grateful and grieving. You can know it is time and still want to cry in the driveway.

Here is what helped me stop judging myself for the tears. Neuroscience says your nervous system does not always recognize growth at first. Sometimes it only recognizes change, and the brain files change under danger, even change you prayed for. So that flicker of panic is not a sign you made the wrong choice. It is just a body asking, are we safe here?

And the way I answer that for my soul is the same every morning. I wake and worship, even on vacation, even in a half unpacked house. Be still and know. One steady thing that tells my body God is still here and so am I.

So here is what I am actually doing. I am starting smaller than I want to. One box. One walk. One brave yes. One brave no. The brain craves predictability during change, so I keep one small anchor in every day no matter where I am. A prayer. Coffee outside. A journal page.

Have you ever had to rebuild a season of your life from the ground up? What was the one steady thing that held you? Tell me, I am taking notes.

If no one told you today: you are not behind because your life looks different now. You are allowed to begin again.

This whole season of starting over is what I ended up writing my book about. More on that another day. For now, one box.

Just stay sweet and steady.
Love you,
Jenn
