We Made It. How to Beat Jet Lag on an Overnight Flight in Midlife

My three non-negotiables, one bonus, and a morning in Athens.

Hey you, it's me.

I landed in Athens this morning, and I want to tell you the truth before I tell you about the city.

Jet lag in midlife is not the same animal it was in my twenties. My body keeps the receipts now.

So before I hit the pavement, let me hand you the three things I will not fly overnight without. My non-negotiables.

One. Sleep training the week before takeoff.

I do not wait for the plane to start the work. For about a week before a red-eye, I nudge my bedtime toward my destination time, a little earlier each night. That way the flight is not the first time my body is asked to sleep on a new clock. It has already been practicing.

Two. The scarf trick.

A creator on TikTok taught me this one, and I wish I knew who to credit, because it changed everything. You loop a scarf to hold your head in place so it stops falling forward and jerking you awake every twenty minutes. Your neck relaxes. Your body finally believes it is allowed to rest. Simple, and it works.

Three. Weighted sleep socks and a foot sling.

The weighted socks keep my feet warm and quietly tell my nervous system it is safe to settle. Then I add a foot sling, the kind that hangs from the tray table in front of you and lifts your legs. It takes the pressure off, helps your circulation, and lets you actually rest instead of just sitting upright for eight hours.

Bonus. A phone holder that clips to the tray table.

This one saved my neck, literally. It clips onto the tray table and holds your phone at eye level, so you can watch your shows hands-free without craning your head down for the whole flight. Small thing. My shoulders thanked me.

And then I landed. No slow morning for me. We hit the pavement running. Shopping, a long lunch, and we walked until our feet protested, taking in the sights.

Taking care of the body on the way is not vanity. It is how I get to be fully awake when I arrive. I did not want to sleep through Greece. I wanted to be present for it.

Now your turn. Have you tried any of these? And what is the one travel non-negotiable you will not fly without? Send me a note. I read every one.

Enjoy your week. I am just a note away.

I'm waiting on your note~

A Few Questions I Get About Flying in Midlife

The honest answers, from the seat next to you.

Does jet lag get worse in midlife?

For a lot of us, yes. Our internal clock gets less flexible as we age, so the same red-eye that barely fazed us at twenty-five can flatten us now. That is exactly why I prep before I ever board.

How do you prevent jet lag on an overnight flight?

I start days before the flight, not on it. I shift my sleep toward my destination time, I protect real rest on the plane with a few simple tools, and I get into daylight as soon as I land. Sleeping through arrival day is the fastest way to stay wrecked all week.

How do you sleep sitting up on a plane?

The scarf keeps my head from falling and waking me, weighted socks settle my body, and the foot sling takes the pressure off my legs. Small things. Big difference.

What is the scarf trick for sleeping on a plane?

You loop a scarf around your head and the headrest so it holds your head in place. It stops your head from falling forward and jerking you awake every twenty minutes. Your neck relaxes, and your body finally believes it is allowed to rest.

What's Your Travel Non-Negotiable?

Tell me what you will not fly without.
