Sunday Snapshot: What Lie Are You Believing?

Midlife faith, the quiet stories we tell ourselves, and learning to let people show up.

Hey you, it’s me.

Can I tell you something I don’t particularly love admitting?

Sometimes I feel completely alone.

Then I look around and think, “Jenn, seriously? You have a family, good friends, an amazing online community, and people who love you. Most of all, you have God.”

So why does that little voice still show up, whispering, “You can only depend on yourself”?

Maybe your voice sounds different. Maybe it tells you you’re too much, not enough, or needed by everyone but truly seen by no one.

I think midlife has a way of making those thoughts louder. The kids grow up. The house gets quieter. Friendships shift. You start asking who you are when no one needs you quite the same way. And because you’ve spent years being the one who handles things, “I’m good” comes out of your mouth almost automatically.

Even on the days when you’re really not.

That’s what I was thinking about after church today. I went in expecting a sermon, but I came out with a question I can’t shake.

What lie am I believing?

Welcome to Sunday Snapshot

This is our very first Sunday Snapshot.

Every Sunday, I’d love to share what I heard at church, how it touched me, what I’m ready to leave behind from the past week, and what I’m carrying into the week ahead. Grab your coffee, energy drink, or tea, and bring your journal, Bible, and a pen. Come sit with me for a little while; we can work through it all together.

Jenn Board leaning against the stone cross at Finisterre, Spain, at the end of her Camino, with the ocean and mountains behind her.

Earlier today, I shared this photo from my Camino journey on my social media. That’s me beside the old stone cross at Finisterre, looking out over the water. I remember the quiet. After all those miles, I could finally stand still and simply be.

This morning, I was sitting in church when I heard something that made me stop and think. Joel 2:12 says, “Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart.”

Even now. After all the detours, the disappointments, and the prayers that didn’t get answered the way we hoped. After years of trying to carry things we were never meant to carry alone. Those two little words stayed with me. Because can I tell you something? There are days when I know exactly what Scripture says, and I still struggle to live like I believe it.

I know the verses. I’ve prayed the prayers. I’ve seen God show up in my life more times than I can count. And yet, when something goes wrong, what’s the first thing I do? I start figuring out how I’m going to fix it, how I’m going to handle it, and how I’m going to get through it. Somewhere along the way, I got really good at carrying things and calling it strength.

And sitting there in church this morning, I started wondering, how much of what I’m carrying did God ever ask me to pick up in the first place?

The Man on the Roof

You know that old story about the man whose house is flooding? A police officer tells him to evacuate. He refuses because God will save him. A boat comes. Same answer. Then an aircraft comes, and he turns that down too. He dies and asks God why He never helped.

And the punch line is that God sent the officer, the boat, and the aircraft.

Y’all. I laugh, and then I get a little uncomfortable.

Because how often have I said, “I’m good,” when someone offered to help? How often have I prayed for support and then brushed it off when it came through another person?

Maybe that’s the question for this week: What if the help we’ve been asking for has already knocked on the door?

The Lie I’ve Made Room For

One line from church ended up in big letters in my notes: Sin is a liar.

Then I wrote this underneath: When we make space for the lie, we begin to believe the lie.

The lie I’ve made room for is this: “You are always alone. You can only depend on yourself.”

I don’t hear it every day. But it shows up when something hurts, when life feels uncertain, when the room is quiet and I decide it’s easier to just handle everything myself.

And I want to say something clearly. Feeling lonely is human. You can have a loving family, good friends, and deep faith, and still feel lonely. There is no shame in that.

What I’m trying to catch is the moment a feeling turns into a verdict. “I feel alone today” becomes “I have no one.” And once I believe that, I stop asking. I stop reaching out. I keep waving off the lifeboat.

The truth? I do have people. And I have a God who says, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5, NIV).

Never. That’s the word I’m taking with me.

Believing God in the Messy Middle

Something else I wrote down today: Am I just doing the things I think faith requires, or am I trusting God with the life I’m actually living?

Obedience matters. Belief matters. Scripture connects them. But I can show up, serve, pray, and still catch myself behaving as if I have to solve every hard thing alone.

The Israelites saw extraordinary signs and still struggled to trust. Numbers 14:11 asks how long they would refuse to believe despite what God had shown them. I read that and think about the signs I’ve missed, the people who’ve shown up, the times I’ve been carried through something and somehow forgotten it by the next hard season.

I don’t have this all mastered. I’m writing this because I need the reminder too.

Fully Known, Fully Loved

The last line in my church notes reads: Grace → Hope → Love → Fully Known → Fully Loved.

I love that. God knows the questions, the fear, the guarded places, and the moments when I say “I’m fine” because I don’t know how to explain what’s really happening.

Psalm 139:23 begins, “Search me, God, and know my heart.” That’s my prayer this week. Show me what I’ve been believing. Show me where I’ve closed the door. Help me trust enough to open it again.

And maybe returning starts small. A prayer. An honest conversation. A text that says, “Actually, could you help me?” One step, and then another. The Camino taught me something about that.

What I’m Leaving Behind

The belief that I can only depend on myself.

What I’m Taking Into This Week

The truth that I have good friends. I have family. I have God. Even when I’m sitting in a quiet room.

A Little Something for Us: The 7-Day Wholehearted Reset

Okay, friend, I made us something. Two free printables, actually, so you can choose what fits your week. Nothing to perfect. Nothing to perform. Just seven chances to pause, pray, tell ourselves the truth, and let a little help in.

Print it. Live it. Share it. Tag me.

Download the Quick Reset Card from this post. One small prompt for each day, Monday through Saturday. Print it and put it on your fridge, bathroom mirror, or inside your journal.

Want to go deeper? Download the Go Deeper 6-Day Devotional. Each day has a short devotion, a question to pause on, journal space, a little prayer, and one small step. It takes about 5 to 8 minutes a day.

Take a picture of your printable, your coffee, or your little corner of the world where you’re doing the reset.

Share it to Instagram and tag @justjennboard so I can see your Sunday Snapshot. And send it to a friend who might need the reminder too.

We’re walking through this messy middle together. 🤍

Then come back Saturday. Tell me what surprised you, what you’re leaving behind, and what you’re carrying into next week. I’ll be doing it right alongside you.

A Prayer of Surrender: Prepare My Heart for the Next 7 Days 🤍

Heavenly Father,

Lord, as I come before You this week, open my heart. Quiet the noise around me and within me so I can hear Your voice. Lay the answers to the questions I’ve been carrying on my heart. Give me the wisdom to recognize Your direction, the patience to wait for Your timing, and the courage to follow wherever You lead.

Lord, prepare my heart for the next seven days. Help me make space for You each morning, even if it’s only five minutes. Open my eyes to the things I need to see, the truths I need to acknowledge, and the places in my heart that still need Your healing. Reveal anything I’ve been holding on to that is keeping me from drawing closer to You.

Go before me this week, Lord. Prepare my heart for the conversations I haven’t had, the decisions I haven’t made, and the moments I don’t even know are coming. Help me recognize Your presence in the ordinary moments of my day.

I want to hear You calling me, Lord, even in the quiet.

Here I am. I am available.

I say yes, Lord, before You even ask.

I surrender my thoughts, my words, my worries, and my heart. Every part of me belongs to You. Help me release what I’ve been holding too tightly and trust You with what I cannot yet see.

Over these next seven days, teach me to listen more than I speak, trust more than I worry, and surrender more than I try to control. When I find myself falling back into old habits, gently remind me to return to You with my whole heart.

And Lord, when You call, help me recognize Your voice. When You lead, give me the faith to follow. When I grow weary, remind me that I was never meant to walk this journey alone.

I am listening, Lord.

I am here.

I am available.

My thoughts, my words, my heart, and the next seven days are Yours.

My answer is yes. In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🤍

Three Questions to Sit With

• What lie have I repeated so often that it sounds like the truth?

• Where am I saying “I’m good” when I could really use someone?

• Who has shown up for me lately, and have I let them?

If you want to go deeper this week, read Joel 2:12, Numbers 14:1–11, Hebrews 13:5–6, and Psalm 139:1–18.

This song stayed with me after church on Sunday. It reminded me that surrender begins with a willing heart.

My prayer this week is simple: Lord, I hear You calling. I’m here. I’m available. My answer is yes, even before You ask. 🤍

🤍 Verse of the Week: Joel 2:12 (NIV)

“Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.”

Until our next chat. Just stay sweet out there.

I love you, Jenn💋

Don’t quit in the quiet.

You never have to walk through this messy middle alone.

I was the woman who almost didn’t speak. The woman who spent years trying to find her voice, wondering if her story even mattered.

Maybe that’s you right now. Maybe you’ve spent so much of your life showing up for everyone else that somewhere along the way, you stopped showing up for yourself.

If that’s you, I wrote Silent to Spoken with you in mind. My book is available now, and you can find it through my website.
