25 Books That Changed Me - Jenn Board's reading list of books on boundaries, faith, healing, the nervous system, confidence, and relationships in midlife

Come sit with me. These are books that helped me navigate boundaries, faith, grief, nervous system healing, confidence, relationships, and learning how to stop abandoning myself in the messy middle of life.

Books that changed me, challenged me, and helped me find language for the silence.

A note from Jenn: This isn't a list of perfect books - it's a list of books I've actually read, and I feel like I took something from every one of them. Think of it as a recommendation, not a rulebook. Take what you feel led to read, and leave what isn't for you. I hope this list helps you on your journey.

Silent to Spoken: A Woman's Journey Through the Pause

by Jennifer Board

This book was born from seasons where I felt unseen, overwhelmed, and emotionally exhausted. I thought I was writing about finding my voice, but I discovered I was really learning how to understand the silence first. I walked through estrangement, separation and reconciliation in my marriage, friendship breakups, and a community that did not know how to meet me in the in-between.

The women who have read the manuscript have described it as a companion for feeling seen. They have shared that it helped them finally feel understood in the struggles they faced in midlife. I was left on my knees crying out, and "Be still, and know that I am God" became the whisper I still carry with me daily.

Releasing October 6, 2026 from Ballast Books.

Set Boundaries, Find Peace

This book helped me realize boundaries are not punishment, they are protection. I spent years thinking being available to everyone made me loving. What I learned is that exhaustion and resentment eventually speak louder than honesty ever would have.

The Pretty Truth

Maria Williams

This book speaks to the pressure women feel to stay polished while quietly struggling underneath. I connected deeply with the reminder that confidence is not perfection, it is learning to show up honestly anyway. Midlife has a way of stripping away performance and asking us who we really are underneath it.

Stormie Omartian

I appreciated how this book highlights spiritual partnership and emotional covering inside marriage. Healthy relationships require intentionality, humility, and prayer from both people. The Power of a Praying Couple

Stormie Omartian

In 2026, gray divorce is on the rise, and I believe a marriage that can be saved is worth fighting for. I also know reconciliation is not always available, and many people are dating again after growth, change, grief, or circumstances outside their control. If you are building a healthy relationship in the messy middle, learning to pray together is a powerful place to start. This book reminds me that unity is built daily through communication, grace, and prayer.

The Power of Praying for Your Adult Children

Stormie Omartian

Letting adult children grow into their own lives can be beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. Walking through estrangement has reminded me that prayer for our adult children may be one of the most powerful gifts we still get to offer them. When you cannot send a text or an email, you can still send a prayer. This book reminded me that loving them sometimes means trusting God in the spaces where I no longer have control.

The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?

Rick Warren

This book helped ground me during seasons where I questioned my direction and purpose. It reminded me life is bigger than achievement, performance, or approval. Often, our purpose is not found in the thing that feels most comfortable, it is found in the thing we keep being called back to. I found purpose in words, and this book helped me pray, journal, and navigate standing in seven lanes of traffic, unsure which way to go next.

The books in my hands this May - what I'm reading right now in the messy middle.

Currently Reading

After the Boxes Are Unpacked

Susan Miller

I first read the original version of this book around 2010 through a women's group at my local church. It was during one of our first moves, and the move from Birmingham to Chattanooga was my first big move away from everything that felt familiar. I was pregnant, trying to find new doctors, new friends, a new church rhythm, and a place to belong. This book offered comfort then, and as I prepare to relocate again, I am going back to reread the revised version because every move has taught me something new about adjustment, identity, and rebuilding. I recommend this to anyone moving to a new city or trying to find their footing after life changes locations.
